Techniques on Formatting your Self-Published Book!

As a self-published author you are expected to do most of the work by yourself. This is because you don’t have the support of a traditional publishing house. This means that you will have to support the book publishing process by yourself, with your own resources. But aside from this you will also have to do most of the book formatting process by yourself. And because the appearance of the book really does affect how the readers react to your book, it will have to be as perfect as possible. But this is easier said than done because book formatting is one of the most time consuming aspects of the book publishing process. And you will have to be able to do it in a systematic and efficient way.  Here are great book format tips for self-published authors.

  • Double check your manuscript for errors

Before you set out on formatting your book, it is important that you clean up your book of writing errors. That way, once you start the book format process, you can do it without any second thoughts. It is very important that you proofread your work as thoroughly as possible. If you are confident in your proofreading skills you can do it yourself. Just make sure that you double check every aspect of it because these same mistakes will come back to haunt you in the end. When proofreading your work, be sure to use your spellcheck to check for obvious spelling errors. But don’t just rely on just the spellcheck, it is always a useful habit to visually proofread your spelling, so that you won’t miss anything. You should also make sure that your spacing is correct and pay close attention to your use of punctuation marks, hyphens and commas because they can be tricky. But if you still have doubts of your work, it is always good to have it checked by a professional. Remember that one error can ruin the entire book formatting process.

  • Set up your book’s interior

Before you do the actual book formatting you should have an overall plan for your book format. Think of it as a sort of blue print for your book’s overall format. Choose how you want your book’s interior to look like. When we talk about the interior this includes the Page set up where you properly fit the size you plan for your book.  You can customize your page set up to fit your needs. When it comes to book margins it is advisable that you consistently have a one inch margin on all sides, that way your book will have an allowance for errors in cutting pages for binding. All in all the book interior is up to your specifications. Just be sure that it is easy to use and pleasing to the eye. As for your book’s page numbers it is always preferable that you insert the page number at the bottom of every page. Just insert the number and avoid adding any designations because it will only make it look awkward.

  • Choose the right font style

One of the most common mistakes authors commit is that they choose overly flamboyant or grandiose fonts. And because of this, it makes the overall book formatting look cheap and amateurish. So when you choose your font always stick with Times New Roman, which is considered one of the most well used fonts. It is good to avoid rarer fonts because it might come out badly during the printing process. As for the font size, 12 is always a safe choice, because it is neither too big as to make the sentence composition look unwieldy or too small to make reading it uncomfortable.

As for the headings, the font size can range from 18 to 24 depending on your preference and the overall effect it would have on the book’s appearance. As for the headings you can try out other fonts, just as long as it not too flamboyant and can be read clearly and prints well. The best text though would be a Sans Serif font, which are known as block letters. Using this type of text is highly suitable for headings because you would want your headings to be bold and easy to notice.

  • Make your book cover attractive

Your book cover is just as important as your book’s interior. This is because it is a way for you to attract potential readers.  The more attractive your book cover design the easier it will be to draw in readers. Which is why you should do your best to customize your book cover. When designing your book cover it is always a good idea to have a minimalist approach to the design. That way your book cover will look stylish and uncluttered. When choosing colors it is a good idea to stay with neutral colors like white, grey or maroon because they are pleasing to the eye.
